THE BIG STORY

High pressure breaks down as a trough of low pressure heads our way. That will bring warm weather today and tomorrow before colder air settles in next week.

TODAY’S FORECAST

We start the weekend off with temperatures in the 40s and 50s as drier air and clear skies have settled in. If you have outdoor plans this mroning, you’ll need the light jacket or hoodie. Temperatures will warm to the mid 60s for the lunch hour. Highs today will climb to the low, mid and upper 70s. So, it will be warm in the direct sunlight. If you are heading to Neyland Stadium for the football game it will be quite warm feeling in the direct sunlight. But, if you’re going into the game, temps will drop to the low 60s toward the end of the game.

BUT IT DOESN’T STOP THERE

THE REST OF THE STORY

As we round out the weekend, a cold front will be swinging our way. That will produce a gusty Sunday with winds out of the southwest ahead of the front 20-30 mph. This will help push our high temperatures into the low to mid 80s. A warm, fall day ahead.
However, into the evening hours, the cold front will be moving through. This could spark off some isolated strong to severe storms. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a level 1 risk. Damaging wind is the main threat, but we could see some hail, thanks to the very cold air aloft. The best timing will be after 7pm through just after midnight Sunday.
As the front moves to our southeast, cooer & drier air will race in. That will drop our highs and lows all week long.
But, it doesn’t stop there. We have another piece of energy moving around the base of the trough Tuesday into Wednesday. That will bring even drier and colder air. The coldest air of the season. Highs will be in the 50s and low 60s, but lows will dip into the low to mid 30s. Widespread frost is anticipated Wednesday and Thursday morning. We could also see a few flurries in the high peaks of the Smokies.
Heading into next weekend, high pressure builds back in which will allow our high temperatures to warm back to the 70s.

A LOOK AHEAD

We are in for a nice dry weather pattern this week. But, per the Climate Prediction Center, we are going to be on the drier side through the middle of the month. Which, of course, is par for the course for the month of October. Plus, we end the 7 day stretch on the colder than average side, but a ridge of warmer high pressure will start to nudge our way over the next two weeks.
