Welcome to the weekend, my friends!
As your local meteorologist for East Tennessee, I’m delivering the latest weather update for Saturday, June 28, 2025. If you were hoping for dry conditions today, I hate to be the bearer of bad news—this is a wash, rinse, and repeat forecast.

Saturday: A Mild Start, A Stormy Afternoon
We’re starting the day with mild, muggy conditions, with temperatures in the 60s and 70s—a welcome relief from the week’s heat. By noon, expect a quick climb to the low to mid-80s, with afternoon highs reaching the low 90s. However, the heat index will push into the mid to upper 90s, delivering an average summer day with a humid twist. Showers and storms will fire up after lunchtime, beginning along the Cumberland Plateau from noon to 2 PM. Outflow boundaries will then trigger additional storms in the Valley from 2 PM to 6 PM, with lingering showers into the evening. If these fade as expected, it’s great news for tonight’s 4th of July festivities. Track these storms with the free eastTNweather app—your go-to tool for dodging the rain!

As in recent days, torrential downpours are likely, raising the risk of localized flooding or flash flooding. The Weather Prediction Center maintains a Level 1 risk for flash flood concerns, so watch for rising water in isolated spots and never drive through flooded roads. Stay vigilant, especially in low-lying areas.

Sunday: Slightly Less Stormy, Still HOT
Sunday, June 29, brings more afternoon storms, though with slightly less coverage than today. Highs will range from the upper 80s to low 90s—typical for late June—while the heat index climbs to the mid to upper 90s. Plan outdoor activities like lake trips or pool days with caution, keeping an eye on the skies. The eastTNweather app’s real-time alerts will help you navigate these summer storms safely.

Monday and Tuesday: A Cold Front Leads to Heavy Rain
I’ll be tracking an upper-level trough moving out of the Upper Midwest, ushering in a “cold front” on Monday, June 30, and Tuesday, July 1. Ahead of the front, dew points will rise to the mid-70s, creating tropical-like downpours that could lead to localized flooding and flash flooding. Some storms may strengthen, so check back over the weekend and into next week for updates. Highs will hold steady in the upper 80s to low 90s, but the focus will be on managing the wet conditions.

4th of July Weekend: Slightly Drier Air and a Bit More ‘Comfortable’
Behind Tuesday’s cold front, the air will dry out slightly, offering a couple of key benefits. Rain chances will drop, which is excellent news for the 4th of July weekend (July 3-6, 2025), and the atmosphere will feel more comfortable on Wednesday, July 2, and Thursday, July 3. However, dew points will climb again from Friday, July 4, through Sunday, July 6, pushing the heat index back to the mid-90s. This could spark a few isolated afternoon storms, though widespread activity isn’t expected at this time. Stay tuned for refinements as the holiday nears.

Heat and Storm Safey Tips for East Tennessee
With heat indices in the 90s and storm risks looming, here are essential safety tips:

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink water consistently, avoiding dehydrating drinks like alcohol or soda.
  • Seek Shade or Indoors: Avoid outdoor time from 10 AM to 4 PM and use air-conditioned or shaded areas.
  • Wear Light Clothing: Opt for loose, light-colored fabrics to reflect heat and protect your skin.
  • Check on Vulnerable People: Monitor elderly neighbors, children, and pets who are more susceptible to heat.
  • Heed Flood Warnings: Avoid flooded roads and watch for flash flood signs, especially during heavy rain.
