Happy Fri-YAAAAAAY, East Tennessee!
As your local meteorologist, I’m excited to bring you the latest weather update for Friday, June 27, 2025. While the heatwave is easing slightly, we’re still in for a warm day with more rounds of stormy weather.

Morning Starts with Patchy Fog and Milder Temps
We’re kicking off the day with patchy dense fog, especially in Upper East Tennessee, thanks to the recent rains that soaked the region. Morning temperatures are a welcome relief, sitting a bit cooler than yesterday in many spots, with readings in the upper 60s to low 70s. Enjoy this small break from the heat, but don’t get too comfortable—warmth is on the way. By noon, temperatures will climb near 90°F, with the heat index reaching the mid-90s. Afternoon highs will settle in the low 90s, though the heat index could nudge close to 100°F, keeping us cautious under lingering heat concerns.

Afternoon Storms with Movement and Risks
Unlike the stationary storms of the past few days, today’s weather will see storms firing along the mountains and drifting northwest. This movement offers a better chance of rain for the Valley, so keep an eye on the Smokies and track these systems with the eastTNweather app—available as a free download! The Storm Prediction Center has us under a Level 1 risk for isolated strong to severe storms, fueled by a water-loaded atmosphere. Expect damaging wind gusts, frequent lightning, some hail, and locally heavy rain, which could lead to flash flooding. The Weather Prediction Center’s Level 1 flood risk reinforces this concern, so stay alert, especially in low-lying areas.

Weekend Forecast: Rainy Relief and Seasonal Heat
Looking ahead, the weekend—Saturday, June 28, and Sunday, June 29—will maintain elevated rain chances. Highs will range from the upper 80s to low 90s, aligning with seasonal norms, but the heat index will hover near 100°F. Afternoon storms are expected with good coverage, making them a key factor if you’re heading to lakes, pools, or outdoor events. The eastTNweather app’s lightning alert feature, notifying you when strikes are within 15 miles, is a game-changer for staying safe during these summer storms. Plan accordingly and keep your phone handy for real-time updates.

Next Week: A Cold Front and Heavy Rain
Next week, I’ll be tracking a cold front arriving around Tuesday, July 1. As it approaches, atmospheric moisture will spike, leading to significant rain and potential downpours. Heavy rainfall could elevate flash flood risks across East Tennessee, so preparedness is essential. Highs will remain average, in the upper 80s to low 90s, but the focus will be on managing the wet conditions.

4th of July Preview: A Potentially Amazing Holiday Weather-wise
With the 4th of July weekend (July 3-6, 2025) just a week away, early indications are promising. If Tuesday’s cold front pushes through successfully, slightly drier air could settle in, reducing the heat index and lowering the chance of afternoon storms. This would make for an amazing holiday celebration in Knoxville, Chattanooga, and the Smokies. It’s a big “if” at this stage, so check back often—the eastTNweather app will keep you informed with all the latest alerts and forecasts!

Heat Safety Tips for East Tennessee
Even with a slight cooldown, the heat index demands attention. Here are essential safety tips:

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink water steadily throughout the day, avoiding dehydrating beverages like alcohol or sugary drinks.
  • Seek Shade or AC: Limit outdoor time from 10 AM to 4 PM and find air-conditioned or shaded spots to cool off.
  • Dress Light: Wear loose, light-colored clothing to reflect heat and protect against sun exposure.
  • Check on Others: Monitor elderly neighbors, children, and pets who are more vulnerable to heat.
  • Watch for Symptoms: Look out for dizziness, nausea, or rapid pulse—seek help if heat exhaustion or stroke signs appear.

ABOVE AND BEYOND THE 7 DAY FORECAST

Looking past the 7 Day Forecast, the Climate Prediction Center has issues a forecast based on probabilities.

Why This Weather Matters
The patchy fog stems from yesterday’s rains, while the shifting ridge of high pressure and incoming tropical low from the Gulf are driving our stormy pattern. Precipitable water levels—indicating the moisture available to fall as rain—are high, heightening flood risks. This dynamic setup, combined with seasonal heat, makes local forecasting critical for safety and planning.
