TODAY’S FORECAST

It’s an incredibly cold start to the day. The coldest so far, but even colder weather expected tonight. More on that in a minute.
We’ll have mid level cloudiness as moisture streams in from the Gulf of Mexico where they are getting hammered with a winter storm. Graphics are below about how much they could see.
These mid level clouds could produce some flurries in the mountains, but that would be about it. Cloud deck is too high and the lower atmosphere is too dry.
Due to the clouds, it will have a much colder feeling to the air today even though we will be about the same temperature-wise as yesterday.
Another COLD WEATHER ADVISORY goes into effect tonight for all of East Tennessee. These midlevel clouds will move out and leave us with clear skies.

THE REST OF THE STORY

We stay relatively quiet through the workweek. I say relatively because there is is another disturbance late Wednesday into early Thurday that may bring some light snow to the mountains,. Then we warm as another cold front, or rather an arctic front heads our way. That will help to push our afternoon high temperatures into the upper 40s to low 50s, which is right where we should be for this time of the year, based on a 30 year average.
The cold front arrives on Friday and Saturday. That will bring us very beneficial rainfall, up to one inch is possible. But, behind that cold front we drop like a rock. There is a very slight chance for some mountain snow showers on Sunday and maybe even a few flurries in the valley. No travel troubles expected.
Now let’s talk arctic air.
The latest model guidance has some of the coldest air of the year heading our way. I mean, I’m talking temperatures running 20-30 degrees colder than average. And remember, our average high is 48 and low is 30.

THAT’S SOME COLD AIR!
Now we just need to monitor and storms that may develop in the Deep South. If that happens, and yes, there are signs it could, we could be dealing with another major winter storm in the southeastern United States.
STAY TUNED!
